How You Can Make a Difference in Other People’s Lives

Let’s face it: Most of us just don’t have enough money to make a considerable donation to our favorite charity. That’s okay. There are plenty of other things you can do that will make a huge difference in other people’s lives. And at the end of the day, these are much more rewarding than just sending off some money to a charity.
-
Be there when your friends need support—Sometimes, all it takes to make a difference in someone’s life is to be there for them when they need a shoulder to cry on. We all go through tough times in life, and it’s often the support of our friends and family that helps us come out the other end of these difficult situations. Be there for those who need your support.
-
Be a good neighbor—You can easily make a difference in your neighbor’s lives just by putting in a little effort to get to know them. Build relationships with your neighbors, and let them know you’re there for them if they ever need anything. There’s something comforting about knowing you live around people who care for you.
-
Volunteer at local events for your favorite charities—Charities are always holding events to raise funds and spread awareness for their cause. If you don’t have the money to donate to your favorite charity, volunteer at their event instead. This gives you a chance to do some hands-on work with your charity so you can truly see the benefits of your labor.
-
Lend your expertise to non-profits—We all have something of value to offer to our favorite non-profits. For example, if you’re skilled in web design, you can help a non-profit organization create an effective website for spreading their message. If you’re a good photographer, you can help the local animal shelter take and post pictures of their animals available for adoption. Find charitable avenues for using your skills.
-
Be a role model—Unfortunately, many kids don’t have positive influences in their lives. Without the right guidance, their lives end up going down the wrong path. By spending just an hour a week as a mentor, you really can change the future of a young kid. Not only can you help them avoid making the wrong decisions, but you can also make sure they reach their full potential. Enroll in a Big Brother/ Big Sister program in your area.
-
Visit a nursing home—If you’ve ever had a loved one in a nursing home, you know just how depressing and lonely these places can be. Unfortunately, not every nursing home resident has someone to visit them to brighten their day. Consider visiting a local nursing home on occasion just to try to put a smile on someone’s face. Play a game of dominos with them or just hang out and chat; it really can make all the difference in the world for them.
How else can you make a difference in someone’s life?

It’s humbling and inspiring to know how much of a difference we really can make to other people. Sometimes even just a smile from a stranger or somebody giving you a hand is enough to turn your day around.

I get a lot of prople that say ‘It’s really none of your business.” When I offer to help or ask if they need anything.
Has anyone ever wondered how someone can hoard, like keep hundreds of animals, and their neighbors don’t catch this?
I think also that we need to learn to ask for and accept help and advice. That contributes to a lot of barriers to allowing people to make a difference.

If your mission is to make an impact in as many lives as you can, remember it starts with just one. Never underestimate the impact you can have on others. It can be as simple as smiling back. It can be as simple as being overheard. It can be as simple as just knowing you have the choice to take action and seek to serve with no expectation of anything in return. Go be a rock star.
